Online Release of the 1940 Census

The 1940 census will be released online to the public on April 2, 2012 at 9:00 am (eastern). This is the first time a census will be released online. See some interesting comparisons between 1940 & 2010 from the Facts for Features Special Edition news release by the Census Bureau. View this clip from the National Archives to learn about staff preparations & how to use the data. A look back at history will show a poster created to encourage citizens to complete the 1940 census from the Library of Congress.

Workshop: American FactFinder 2

Today Samford University Library hosted "Accessing Census Data Workshop" which focused on the  American FactFinder 2. The workshop was offered by the Government Documents round table of the Alabama Library Association.

Since seating was limited and I'm sure you would like to learn more about the latest edition of American FactFinder, you can learn more about AFF2 from their training presentations and the E-Tutorial. More help may be found under the Guidance For Data Users tab on the main site. As well, questions may be searched and/or submitted by using the About Us option on the Census.gov site.

Census Bureau Releases New Local-Level Demographic Data from 2010 Census for Alabama and Hawaii

The U.S. Census Bureau today released new, detailed demographic data from the 2010 Census for Alabama and Hawaii.

These Summary File 1 data tables provide the most detailed information available so far from the 2010 Census, including cross-tabulations of age, sex, households, families, relationship to householder, housing units, detailed race and Hispanic or Latino origin groups, and group quarters. The data are available for a variety of geographic areas, with most tables available down to the block or census tract level.

The Summary File 1 tables can be found on the Census Bureau's American FactFinder website at <http://factfinder2.census.gov>.

Two Census workshops have been scheduled at Birmingham Public Library

• Census Data Basics -- Tuesday, April 26, 2011 (10 AM - 11:30 AM)

• Census Data and Proposal Writing for Not-for-Profit Organizations -- Tuesday, May 10, 2011 (10 AM - 11:30 AM)

Both presentations will be held in the Arrington Auditorium, which is located on the 3rd floor of the Linn Henley Research building at the downtown Birmingham Public Library.

The 2011 Statistical Abstract

The 2011 Statistical Abstract is now available from the Census Bureau. You might be interested in the amount of debt held by families (table 1172) even though the percent distribution is for 2004 and 2007.

Good news from the Department of Labor regarding the definition of son and daughter within the FMLA. This news release states that an employee will receive parental rights to family leave regardless of the biological or legal relationship. Don't worry if the news release link disappears, the HR folks at your company will be able to explain this to you. As well, the Wage and Hour Division (WHD) of the Dept. of Labor has more information.
